How often should the UVB light be replaced?

2024-11-21
Latest company news about How often should the UVB light be replaced?
Manufacturers generally recommend replacing UVB bulbs every 6 - 12 months, depending on the type of bulb and its usage.

The reason for this replacement schedule is that UVB bulbs lose their effectiveness over time. As the bulb ages, the amount of UVB radiation it emits decreases. This reduction in UVB output can lead to insufficient vitamin D3 synthesis in the reptile's skin. If a reptile doesn't receive enough UVB light, it may develop health problems such as metabolic bone disease.

For example, fluorescent UVB bulbs tend to have a shorter effective lifespan compared to some other types. In a busy reptile enclosure where the light is on for 12 - 14 hours a day, a fluorescent UVB bulb might need to be replaced closer to the 6 - month mark. On the other hand, mercury vapor bulbs, which are more durable in some ways, may last closer to 12 months under normal usage conditions.

It's also a good idea to use a UVB meter to measure the actual UVB output in the enclosure. This way, you can more accurately determine when the bulb needs to be replaced. If the measured UVB output falls below the recommended range for your specific reptile species, it's time to replace the bulb, even if it hasn't reached the typical 6 - 12 - month period.
